Rudolf Strohmeier, founder of Ideal Engineering, arrived in the United States from Germany in 1955. Settling in Southern California in 1959, he spent the next nine years working as a machinist before striking out on his own. He started Ideal Engineering in 1968 in 2,000 square feet of rented space in Santa Ana, California. At that time, Rudolph and two employees were building dies and running punch press parts for the commercial and electronics industries. The next three decades saw steady growth and several changes at Ideal Engineering. The business was incorporated in 1973 and flourished as Rudolph augmented the stamping business with production machining for the aerospace industry. Ideal bought its own building in 1984 and today occupies 2,500 square feet of modern manufacturing space in Santa Ana, California.

Rudolf’s son, Rudy, joined the business full-time in 1980 following many years of working part-time after school and on weekends. Rudy’s natural ability for CNC programming and machining was developed on the shop floor at Ideal and, from time to time, at other machine shops over the next two decades. When Rudolph passed away suddenly in 1999, Rudy stepped in as president to take control of the business.
